Not All Pipeline Surveys Happen on Dry Land
Most close interval surveys are conducted on onshore pipelines – walking rural right-of-ways and navigating open terrain. But a significant portion of the world’s pipeline infrastructure runs underwater: rivers, bays, coastal zones, and open-ocean seafloor. Offshore surveys come with distinct challenges that require different wire specs, spool configurations, and connection options.
What Changes for Offshore Survey Wire
Environmental Exposure
Onshore wire operates in air and soil. Offshore wire is exposed to saltwater, wave action, marine growth, UV radiation, and physical abrasion from underwater surfaces. Advance Electrical offers PVC-coated marine wire specifically designed for offshore and saltwater survey conditions.
Gauge and Spool Capacity
Offshore surveys often cover longer distances and require heavier gauge wire to withstand underwater deployment stresses. Standard hip pack spools do not hold enough footage or accommodate the larger gauges needed for marine work. We offer two offshore-specific spool sizes:
- 8″ x 8″ x 8″ plastic spool
- 11″ x 10″ x 13″ plastic spool
Deployment and Recovery
Offshore survey wire is typically deployed from boats or remotely operated vehicles rather than walked out by a field technician. Spool design, payout tension, and connection durability requirements all change accordingly – factors our team accounts for when configuring offshore orders.
What Stays the Same
Regardless of environment, the core requirement is identical: consistent, reliable electrical conductivity for accurate pipe-to-soil potential readings along the full pipeline length. High-quality, direct-sourced copper wire is the foundation for both onshore and offshore survey operations.
