Close interval surveys are one of the approved assessment methods. Cathodic protection systems must be tested at least once per calendar year under 49 CFR 192.465, not exceeding 15 months between tests.
Hazardous Liquid Pipelines – 49 CFR 195
For hazardous liquid pipelines in HCAs, integrity assessments are required at least every 5 years. CIS is a recognized tool for demonstrating the effectiveness of external corrosion protection programs.
Corrosion Control Monitoring – 49 CFR 192.481 and 195.573
Onshore non-service line pipes must undergo atmospheric corrosion inspections at least every 3 calendar years (not exceeding 39 months), reinforcing the need for ongoing monitoring programs that include close interval surveys.
Preventative and Mitigative Measures
For certain gas pipelines in or near HCAs, close interval surveys are specifically required as part of mandatory preventative and mitigative measures addressing integrity risks identified during assessments.
